All the coaching slots are full. What do I do?
Please check back later for available sessions. Office hours are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Due to the demand of this free service, many of the coaching sessions are booked months in advance. Depending on the coach's calendar, you might be able to schedule sessions up to 90 days out. Sessions open up when someone cancels, and new slots drop on the calendar over time. New coaches are also added to the site periodically, so keep checking! We appreciate your patience.
Can I sign up for multiple sessions with different coaches?
Technically yes, but please don’t. Since many others are also trying to book one-on-one time, please refrain from booking multiple coaching sessions at once. We want as many women as possible to benefit from this experience!
What if I can't make my coaching session?
If you're unable to make your coaching session, please be respectful of your coach’s time and give her a heads up as far in advance as possible. All of the mentors are volunteers and are blocking off their valuable time for coaching. Plus, another woman trying to get one-on-one time scheduled would appreciate that slot! If you missed a session due to unforeseen circumstances, consider sending a note to your coach to let her know what happened. We get it. Life happens. But courtesy is important (and good for your career).
How are the coaches selected?
All of the mentors are graduates of either Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media or ONA’s Women’s Leadership Accelerator, two highly competitive and transformational programs designed to give women leadership skills to help them rise in their journalism careers.
The coaches are all doing this on a volunteer basis, which is insanely generous and badass, and reason #762 that women are amazing.
Who owns this site?
Digital Women Leaders was created and is managed by Katie Hawkins-Gaar. Katie runs the Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media at The Poynter Institute, where she works as an independent consultant.
Can I sign up to be a coach?
Right now, the only coaches affiliated with Digital Women Leaders are women who have participated in either of the aforementioned leadership programs.
You can learn more about Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media and ONA’s Women’s Leadership Accelerator. And if you’re wondering whether you should apply to these programs, the answer is yes!
How can I support this effort?
Thank you for asking! You can assist this project in a few different ways:
Spread the word to other women you think would benefit from mentorship.
If you had a good coaching session, share your experience in a testimonial.
Donate to support the costs of this project, including website hosting and future site features and improvements.
Please note that donations are not tax deductible, and that there's no formal financial relationship between Poynter, ONA and Digital Women Leaders coaching.
Is it cool if I create a similar coaching project?
Please do! A how-to coaching tutorial is currently in the works. In the meantime, you can contact Katie with specific questions on how to launch your own mentoring project.
Why is this only offered to women?
There’s a major gender disparity in journalism leadership, which means there’s a lack of female mentors. Women journalists often face greater challenges building networks, in part, because there aren’t as many women at the highest levels of the industry to connect with and learn from. This project — offered by women, for women — is one way to help solve that problem.
Is coaching available to women outside the U.S.?
Yes! There are several international journalists involved in this project, a group which will continue to grow. A number of our coaches also offer coaching in Spanish.
Are there any new site improvements or features planned?
In the coming months, we’d like to add a number of improvements, including:
A guide on how to build your own mentoring project.
The ability to search by coaching subject.
A database of other coaching projects.
Additional tips on how to make the most of coaching — as a mentor and mentee.
Because this project is volunteer-based and pro bono, site improvements may take a while. You can help support this effort by making a donation.
What if I have other questions or ideas?
We’re listening. Please submit your questions, feedback or other brilliant ideas. And thank you for caring about this project. The response so far has been incredible!
